This Inventory of the Carman-Pruden-Kitchel Correspondence, a unique collection of 609 letters written by 83 people, gives information about the contents of the collection with specifics as to the letters of individuals.

The Selections from Letters contains 12 letters of special interest.

Eventually the collection will be deposited with an historical society or library. At present, anyone interested in receiving copies of any of the letters should write to :

The letters will be of interest to members of these various families , to researchers in American social history and to the general public. The letters contain many details about everyday 19th century life-courtship, weddings, illnesses, deaths, transportation, food, clothing,church meetings.

 

About the letters: Most of the envelopes and letters are small-averaging 5"by 3"-about the size of a notecard. Most are written on ordinary quality paper, frequently lined. Since United States postage was not used until 1847, about 60 have stampless envelopes and sealing wax.
