SEEING QUEEN VICTORIA

From Berlin, in April, 1888, Albert Carman wrote to his father:

"Berlin is again greatly troubled over a sick Kaiser."
{ The new Kaiser, Frederick III, had throat cancer and had not long to live.His father , after 27 years on the throne had died in the preceding month, March 9,1888}
"If the rumors & newspaper reports are true, the poor man will have joined his father before this reaches you. This seems to be a sadder thing than the old Emperor. The old Emperor was very conservative and change introduced was forced."
"The Crown Prince, Prince Wilhelm, is very much enthused with the idea of military renown & leaves questions of policy entirely to Bismarck. You may hear soon that the Crown Prince is already more than half Prince Regent and I see this A.M. that his powers have been increased. The Crown Prince has been going out to the parade grounds every evening for several weeks now.He returns every morning about 11 o'clock riding at the head of one of the crack regiments through the length of Frederichstrasse.

Wednesday the Queen of England came to Berlin &, of course I wanted to see Queen Vic. I had heard of her so long that I wanted to see the old lady. She was in the Schless at Charlottenburg-4 miles from Berlin proper. It is where the present Kaiser has been living since his return from Italy."
{ This was an historic visit. The German authorities had tried to prevent Queen Victoria from coming , but she insisted on seeing her dying son-in-law, presenting him with a flower, kissing him good-bye and telling his son, the future Kaiser, Wilhelm II, to "behave." At a separate meeting she also saw Bismarck, who exclaimed, "That was a woman! I could do business with her!"}
"I had to wait several hours & content myself with seeing lesser personalities such as the Princess Victoria, Margarethe & Sophie, daughters of the Kaiser, Beatrice& Henry, her husband, the Crown Prince & Crown Princess with the four children, the Duke of Baden & a few others.
But, finally, I saw the Queen & her daughter, the Empress. Some enthusiastic Englishmen in the crowd raised a cry of "Hurrah" and certainly the Queen is big enough to shout over. She made light quarters for the Kaiser in the same seat with her.{Victoria was, indeed, obese} I had a most excellent view of her….
The Empress, the daughter, impressed me as a very fine looking woman. The imperial conservative classes in Berlin cannot say too much against her, but no one denies that she has brains and force to use them too. She makes use of them in a way to suit democratic & liberal views."
{The Empress was Victoria Adelaide, eldest child of Victoria and Albert; indeed, she was a very humane and liberal woman who throughout her marriage had to bear the brunt of spiteful accusations and criticism by the antidemocratic forces surrounding the Kaiser}

"The Queen left yesterday. The sickness of the Kaiser made her visit much less of a pageant than it would otherwise have been; still there was considerable of the tapestry of royalty displayed. Some of the crack regiments were out as escorts on her departure yesterday…"

{Frederick died two months later, June 1888. His son became Wihelm II who soon quarreled with Bismarck and whose imperialistic ambitions were to plunge the world into war in 1914}
