A HOSPITAL INTERN,1894

In 1894 Frank Carman was an intern at the Muncipal Hospital in Philadelphia . In November, 1894, he wrote his sister about the outbreak of diptheria in that city.

"Dear Sister Emma:
I came here yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock. I am second Resident Physician. At the present I have charge of the Scarlet Fever ward and the medicines

I was out on the ambulance today, and we brought in two diphtheria . We have about 90 patients here tonight, mostly diphtheria.
I suppose Papa will be out to see me soon, for he was quite anxious for me to take the position.{the one at Muncipal}. Of course, we also have the chance to study the diseases.

• I have just taken an order over the telephone for the ambulance to go out. Dr. Bemis is going out after the case, and it will be about eleven before he gets back. I will close for tonight.

• Two weeks later Frank was dead; he had contracted diptheria from one of the patients. he was 27 years old.
